LG H&H(CEO Cha Seok-yong) has found 10 genes relevant to the skin irritation side-effect of retinol, an anti-aging ingredient, also developing an effective ingredient to control the gene.

The results of this study were published in Pharmaceutics, a world-renowned international academic journal, and this is meaningful because it is the first case of developing gene-based irritation-relief customized ingredients through analysis of the relationship between retinol irritation and genes.

Researchers at the LG Institute for Health Future-based Research hypothesized that the retinol-induced irritation’s different types and levels of sensitivity may be caused by genetic differences. The team then conducted a study to discover the genes involved in retinol’s skin irritation and potential components that can control the side effects. Through this study, the team founds retinol ingredients that are safe and effective on the skin and that it is possible to develop anti-wrinkles cosmetics using these ingredients.

The study was conducted based on Korean genetic big data. The team’s observation of genetic analysis between retinol-sensitive and non-retinol-sensitive customers found the major genes responsible for the itching, stinging and exfoliating caused by retinol. The team developed effective ingredients to control the gene function, confirming that skin irritation for customers who are sensitive to retinol ingredients was relieved.

Kang Nae-kyu, director of the Future Infrastructure Research Institute, said, "This study has laid the foundation for safer and more effective use of retinol," and explained, "Various genetic studies are currently underway to expand the scope of research from Koreans to other races to develop global anti-wrinkle products."
