The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has published two "guidelines for alternative testing methods for animals for fields such as cosmetics" that can evaluate the phototoxicity and skin sensitization of cosmetics without using labratory animals such as rodents. Phototoxicity is an acute toxic reaction when a photoreactive substance applied to the skin is exposed to natural light. Skin sensitization refers to the overreaction of the immune system by antigens entering the skin.
The guidelines published this time are "phototoxicity test method using human skin model" and "chemical skin sensitization test."
