Rethinking Beauty Science - this is the main theme of the ‘33rd IFSCC Congress’, in 2023.

The K Beauty Science analyzed key words that appeared on the posters of the presenters (76) and the main keywords included Skin, Hair, Aging, Microbiome, Protection, Metabolomic, Senescence, Stem cell, and Follicle.

Mr. Baek Seok-yoon, Director of UCL Central Research Institute (Managing Director of Marketing Division), said, “There is a movement to rethink cosmetics materials and formulation technology in accordance with re-opening, changes in population structure and lifestyle, along with a continuous desire to become the first and best.” He then classified this year's presentation topics into raw material technology 41%, devices 22%, formulation technology 12%, microorganisms and microbiome 11%, marketing 10%, and exosomes 3%.

This translates into a shift towards ‘biotechnology’, where many cosmetics R&D topics are emerging from biotechnology, and the results are gradually being commercialized.

A cosmetics researcher said, “So far, cosmetics R&D has focused on materials that can be directly applied to products, and latecomers have narrowed the technology gap. Accordingly, global cosmetics companies have increased their R&D ratio to source technology, gain independence, and create their own R&D storytelling. Because high-level R&D is difficult be performed by a single company, research collaboration via open innovation between industry and the academia are on the rise.”

Consumers apparently are getting smarter too, educating themselves about the science behind ingredients.  What does this mean for everyone? I am wondering if I have to brush off my old biology book!
